The Best Themes in Life are Free

You’re throwing a party! What fun! You’ll see all your friends and family, have some fabulous food, maybe a signature drink.  You’ll get to show off your house and all those pretty decorations. Of course, the entertainment will be off the hook…

Wait. What?

Fabulous food and signature drinks?

Decorations and entertainment?

And exactly how are you going to invite all these people to your house?

Forget those tired meatballs and cheese crackers. Not the same old beer and wine!

Let’s have a party that no one will forget! First, we need to make some plans. It’s not that complicated if you take it one step at a time. If you make a good plan, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to have a great party. No, really. I promise!

The first thing I like to do is pick a theme or tag line.

So

Let’s say you are planning a house warming party and you pick the date May 4. SO close to Cinco de Mayo. So make your party a Cinco Cuatro de Mayo party. Mexican is a quick and easy theme. Once you pick that, it all falls into place.

Or

You are planning a bridal shower. A good way to pick a theme is go by what the wedding theme is. Will the bride carry daisies? Use that as your theme.

Or

Street dance or block party? Pick an era or a song you like or a music genre. That is the start of your theme.

Or

You want to have a party but have no idea what kind of party you want.

Let’s begin with that

Start looking for inspiration; it can be found anywhere. I like to go on-line and do searches. Are you a butterfly person? Is Rockabilly your style? Do you love S’mores? Search these key terms and see what others have done. You don’t have to recreate the wheel! Once you see an idea you like, you will put your own spin on it. Remember, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!

You may want to create an inspiration board or make a Pinterest board just for your party. This will make sure that your ideas are cohesive.

Let’s go with the S’mores theme. Who doesn’t love S’mores?

Invitations

Even if you don’t mail them, you can make a cute invitation and email it or post it on social media.

I did a quick image search of “S’mores invitations” and came up with these invitation ideas.

Fabulous Food

Obviously, you will make s’mores. But what can you serve before dessert? You have a big fire going (probably), what about hotdogs? Here are some ideas I got from an image search of “campfire food”.

 Signature Drink

You could make a chocolatey, marshmallowy hot chocolate. That is so obvious, and it may be nice to have something besides chocolate (no really!). First, do you want it to contain alcohol? Consider your audience. A signature drink can be either (or both).

Use milk with fun garnishes, like the center photo. Or have fun with mixed drinks.

Decorations

I am all about found objects. What do you have around your house that you can use or repurpose. I searched for images related to “S’mores party decorations” and “campfire party decorations”. I was surprised to have so many results. Here are a few I picked because the can be done with items you already have.

Fun napkins, galvanized pails and simple garlands can add style to your event.

Entertainment

You do not have to hire a big band to entertain your group. Let’s go with our S’mores theme. Ask one of your friends to bring his guitar and sing around the fire. Or make a fun party song playlist for your iPad. I searched “campfire party songs” and came up with a few suggestions.

Fire and Rain by James Taylor

Burning Down the House by Talking Heads (or Bonnie Raitt)

Fire by the Pointer Sisters

Come as You Are by Nirvana

Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay by Otis Redding

You can get really punny with the songs, or just pick old favorites everyone knows the words to.

Here’s the Pinterest board I used to compile my ideas.

I took the ideas I liked best and made notes about any directions, recipes or changes.

This is a quick insight into my party planning methods. With a lot of imagination and a little hard work, you can make your party memorable, unique and most of all, fun!

I don’t own the pictures used in this post. These are examples of on-line search results.
